This Summer, We’re Just Walkin

Hola Familias,

Lately, I’ve been thinking about how easy it is to feel pressured to do something big every summer — buy the tickets, plan the outing, make the reservations. But some of my favorite moments with Zola haven’t come from any of that. They’ve come from simply walking out the door.

We live in New York City, a place people travel across the world to explore, yet how often do we forget we can explore it, too? Just by walking.

The other day we wandered without a plan and ended up:

  • Bumping into friends on the block
  • Stopping to admire murals we’ve passed a hundred times but never really noticed
  • Strolling through a farmers market we didn’t even know was there
  • Sitting on a stoop eating fruit from the corner store

No tickets, no time constraints, no expectations. Just moving through our neighborhood, together.

In other parts of the world, people walk their cities as a way of life — not for fitness or errands, but simply to be in their community. I’m reminding myself this summer that we can do the same here. That this is enough.

If summer’s feeling expensive, busy, or overwhelming, maybe give yourself permission to just… walk. You might be surprised where it takes you.
