Hola Familias!
Lately, I’ve been thinking about how much power we, as consumers, really have. Every purchase we make, every dollar we spend—it’s like casting a vote for the kind of world we want to live in.
That’s why it’s been so upsetting to see some of the biggest companies, like Walmart and Target, quietly stepping away from their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. On top of that, some aren’t even acknowledging African American History Month. I don’t know about you, but that doesn’t sit right with me.
At Lola & Tots, inclusivity isn’t just a buzzword. It’s what we’re built on. We’re a Latina-owned business that thrives on celebrating cultures, educating families, and raising kids who embrace justice and empathy. So when we see companies pulling back on their commitments to DEI, it feels personal—not just for us as a business, but for our community as a whole.
Why This Matters
Diversity isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s essential. When companies prioritize DEI, they aren’t just filling quotas. They’re creating workplaces where different voices are heard, decisions are smarter, and people feel seen. Most importantly, they’re showing that they care about the communities they serve.
When a company refuses to celebrate African American History Month or invest in DEI, what they’re really saying is, “Your history, your culture, your voice… it doesn’t matter to us.” That’s not okay.
What Can We Do?
Here’s the good news: we have power. Every time we choose to support businesses that align with our values, we’re sending a message. Let’s make it loud and clear.
Spend with Purpose: Let’s support brands that actually walk the walk. Companies like Ben & Jerry’s and Patagonia have proven time and time again that DEI is more than just lip service.
Call It Out: If a company isn’t doing enough, let them know. Our voices as consumers matter more than we think.
Teach Our Kids: It starts with us. Let’s raise a generation that values diversity, stands up for what’s right, and knows the importance of equity.
At Lola & Tots, we take this responsibility seriously. Whether it’s through our classes, events, or just the space we provide for families, we’re here to make inclusivity the norm—not the exception.
Let’s Keep It Real
I’m not here to tell anyone where to shop or what to do with their money. But I will say this: every choice we make matters. When we invest in companies that prioritize DEI, we’re investing in a future that’s better for all of us—and especially for our kids.
